Energy Star, HERS Rating, Net Zero & Solar Homes Process
We are passionate about lowering your energy bills and creating a smaller footprint while making the environment a better place to live. The government developed ENERGY STAR™, which is known to be the gold standard of programs promoting the saving of energy. Within this program is an analytical benchmark called HERS (Home Energy Rating) by which all houses are measured. Older homes typically score around 150 or higher while new homes generally score in the 100 range. As in golf, the lower the HERS score the better so think of us as the builders with green jackets. Trophy works hard to create homes that measure between high 40’s and 50’s!
In addition to the low HERS score you have the option to make your home energy efficient in other ways: Solar Ready or Solar Complete -Panels installed on the roof, Net Zero Ready or Net Zero Complete -back up batteries installation, and Carbon Neutral Complete home.
The cost of installing an energy level package is location specific as well as building plan specific (i.e. the size of the house, the amount of energy you will need/want to generate, etc.). Many of these programs have government subsidies available which will partially reimburse you with tax credits for the cost of installing these higher-level energy savers. The government subsidies have sunset provisions and are a mixture of state and federal programs. We cannot provide an exact cost unless you have a set of plans and the location of your home, however we can provide a price range that you may expect to see. If you are interested in learning more, you can contact us or go to the ENERGY STAR™ website www.energystar.gov and consult your tax professional.
The following costs are estimates only and the true costs will be different. The cost of each level should be added to the previous levels when calculating potential cost. Please remember that the cost below do not include any government subsidies you may apply for.
Cost Before Subsidies
$3,000 to $5,000
(1) pre-wire conduit to the roof, (2) pre-wire sub-panel, (3) pre-install roof hardware / junctions
$50,000 to $75,000 plus
(1) size “Maximized for Owner Plans" (2) solar panels and inverter installed. Not all panels are equal, not all generate the same Kilowatts of Power. This is the cost of a good panel, they are yours, meaning there is NO 20-year lien placed on your home.
Net Zero Ready
$6,000 to $10,000 plus
Sized differently… plus true bottom engineering based upon energy consumption and production… (1) pre-wire and build battery storage location, (2) pre-wire back-up sub panels, (3) stronger architectural review, need for maximum solar or RE generation
Net Zero Complete
$65,000 to $95,000 plus
24 hr whole home batteries installed, car charger installed
Carbon Neutral Complete
$20,000 to $60,000 plus
LEED Platinum, passive house
All the things needed in construction to make that happen
